China completed on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the maiden flight of the Changying-8, a fixed-wing unmanned cargo aerial vehicle presented as the first Chinese platform in the 7-ton class validated in flight testing.

The operation took place at an airport in Zhengzhou, in Henan province, according to information released by Chinese state media.

Developed by Beijing Beifang Changying UAV Technology Co., Ltd., the Changying-8 features a cargo compartment of 18 cubic meters, a maximum takeoff weight of 7 tons, and a maximum payload capacity of 3.5 tons. The reported maximum range exceeds 3,000 kilometers, positioning the model as a platform designed for medium- and long-range logistics missions.

According to CGTN, the drone took off after a ground roll of about 280 meters, completed approximately 30 minutes of flight, and landed safely after validating systems considered critical, such as intelligent flight control, avionics, electromechanical systems, propulsion and fuel systems, as well as overall flight performance. The state broadcaster also reported that the system operated with intelligent management and manual monitoring during the mission.

According to the released data, the aircraft was designed to support different cargo profiles, including conventional supplies, fresh and cold-chain products, as well as emergency equipment. Expected use scenarios include long-distance logistics transport, emergency rescue deliveries, resupply in border areas, and operations in complex terrain.
